Understanding Vitiligo: Ayurvedic and Astrological Insights

Vitiligo happens when heat (Pitta in Ayurvedic terms and Sun in Astrological sense) is unable to reach the skin properly resulting in malformation of melanin (the brown pigment of skin). This is the reason that herbs that represent Sun (pitta) are used (both orally as well as topically) to treat/cure vitiligo like Calotropis and Bapchi along with other herbs that nourish like Aloevera, those that do not let pitta run too fast and act as antioxidants like Jasmine and Holy Basil/Tulsi (that keep pungency/Mars in control).

At astrological level, combination of several factors would play role in reducing the strength of Pitta on mercury (skin) e.g.

 When moon i.e. rasa is constricted by a cold zodiac (10, 11 or even 4) or cold planet (Saturn) and is closely affecting mercury then it may not form fully form mercury.

• When mercury is seated in a cold zodiac and closely associated with a cold moon (far away from Sun).
• When in Shadbala, Sun is weaker than Mars resulting in less energy accumulation than what is spent (association with Mercury would mean less energy reaching it) and mercury is weak but Saturn is strong resulting in Saturn shrinking the rasa to not to let it open up mercury.
• When Rahu is very strong (e.g. due to its or its zodiac’s i.e. 3^rd zodiac’s presence in first house) and is flared by Mars resulting in excess and sudden opening up of channels which have pungency but not heat (weak Sun).

*** Remember that 3^rd zodiac is of mercury too but mercury’s main sign (mool trikone sign) is 6^th zodiac i.e. Kanya/Virgo and not 3^rd i.e. Gemini/Mithun. 3^rd zodiac is high on VP that pushes Kapha outside and in haywire direction thereby behaving like Rahu.

• Weak Sun means its presence in either a cold zodiac and/or it is present in houses outside Trikone and Kendra.

*** Psoriasis happens because of the other way round where strong Sun (Pitta) fueled by strong Mars (pungency) combusts mercury especially if supported by fiery zodiac. *** The importance of Divisional charts in detecting diseases- We all grow layer by layer and a divisional chart represents those layers whereas main birth chart represents overall outcome. Thus, we must see divisional charts too to assess diseases and their extent. If a div chart shows a disease but is not seen in the main chart then the extent of the disease will be lesser and will appear primarily during the age corresponding to that divisional chart e.g. D2 and D3 would mean early onset of disease however it is not present in subsequent charts and not even in the main chart then the disease may disappear or may get confined.
