EXAMS TIME? WHAT’S BEST FOR YOUR CHILD

Hello Parents, Exam time is ON in most of the parts of the country and in most of the cases, more than the child, its his/her parents who are worried/concerned about his/her performance in the exam as well as the future, in the long run. And that’s why this blog, which becomes all the more important in the wake of extreme steps being taken by the kids due to pressure from parents/society/peer for performing in their exams. By the end of this blog you would be able to understand that:-

  • how you can find out that what field would be ideal for your child and
  •  what discipline should your child maintain to maximize his/her potential.

Lets begin.. So, God or nature has given a unique constitution (meaning Prakriti in hindi/Sanskrit language) to each one of us. And accordingly, our wiring, especially of the brain, is also unique and may be totally different from others. Fortunately Ayurveda, which had broadly divided the world in three constitutions called vata, pitta and kapha, had the wherewithal to decode the wiring of the brain of any personality.

** If you are not familiar with how vata, pitta and kapha govern our brain, it is strongly recommended that you watch this video (click here) before proceeding further.

To give you an example (as a thumb rule), a kid very good in retaining facts and figures (due to high kapha as per Ayurveda comparable to hard disc of the computer which stores information) is not likely to do well in logic needing subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry. Conversely, a kid very good in these logic driven subjects (which comes from high pitta as per Ayurveda comparable with processor of a computer which relays info) is not likely to be good in subjects which require retention by mugging the facts e.g. literature, history, civics and geography. Similarly a kid having a highly creative bent of mind (due to high vata as per Ayurveda comparable to RAM of a computer which creates new circuits) but not highly focused approach would be fit for professions which require this trait like creative arts etc. whereas a kid with a very focused but not highly creative approach would be fit for professions which require good organizing abilities like armed forces. Thus pushing a kid or guiding him/her to go for stream/ profession, which wouldn’t suit his/her wiring of the brain would be a disaster for everyone. Remember these examples are to explain you the concept and that’s why being called as a thumb rule. So, there could be cases where the child is focused as well creative (means high on vata as well as pitta) which is a trait meant for those going in leadership positions handing technical services. A child may be extremely high on both traits (i.e. very high pitta and very high vata) in the same mind, a trait that is found in eminent scientists as it gives lot of creativity with focused approach for research etc. however parents of such children should remember that very high agni in such minds or say very high metabolism due to very high Vata and pitta, may dent the mental health leading to brain disorders if not controlled.

And therefore, it is extremely important for us to understand the constitution of our child because then we would know that what is right for them in all aspects especially during the budding stages of life when she/he needs guidance.

And, now lets talk about what discipline your kid should maintain for maximizing potential. To begin with lets understand that its not a healthy body that contains healthy mind but instead its healthy mind that contains healthy body because its mind that drives the entire body. And therefore our focus should be first on making the mind healthy. Hyperactivity, lack of sleep, not able to sleep in time, getting up late in the morning, irritability, excessive sleep, lethargy, all these traits indicate that the child’s mind needs overhauling. Unfortunately these traits are too common in today’s world and the primary reason for these are:-

  • Not respecting the Sun cycle– It is sun’s light and heat that falls (directly or indirectly) on our pineal gland (third eye) which activates the entire body thus triggering our metabolism. And therefore not sleeping/eating in line with sun cycle contributes big time to unproductive minds. Heat (or pitta in Ayurvedic terms) is highest when sun is at peak and therefore lunch should be our heaviest meal because this is the time when our metabolism is highest and so is our energy demand. However since we remain awake till late nights, in most of the cases, the heaviest meal of the day becomes dinner leading to production of toxins since absence of heat in the night doesn’t let the food get digested properly. These toxins also block our blood circulation and thus making our mind sluggish. And therefore, the take away is that our dinner should be the lightest which can be easily digested like moong dal with rice, etc. Also avoid long sleep during the daytime (unless one is extremely exhausted and not sleeping because of boredom) else one will not be able to sleep in time at night getting into a vicious circle. Of course a short nap of 20 mins or so is fine and rather healthy.
  • Addiction/dependence on chocolates (whether in form of bars or cakes or protein powders) which are not only laden with excess sugar but because of their pungent, astringent and bitter effect, they also reduce blood from peripherals thereby creating issues like headaches, loss of concentration. Even tea and coffee (including green tea) have similar effects. Absence of physical activity leads to poor blood circulation thereby thickening our blood due to less of heat produced. The result is that kids resort to stimulants like tea/coffee to kick their sluggish minds, which have ill effects. It’s a blunder to resort to these things for waking up/keeping awake one’s mind. Instead, the kid should practice to get up and walk after every 30-40 minutes to keep the blood circulation good. Also, food should be fibrous for sustained release of nutrients in the body thus ensuring that blood doesn’t become thick. Of course it doesn’t mean excessive fiber (e.g vegetables only) as too much of fiber is zero in energy and energy is also equally required by the body and mind which is present in foods containing proteins, fats and carbs. LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST, GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT ALL THESE TIPS ARE APPLICABLE ON EVEN THE PARENTS. BECAUSE UNLESS PARENTS FOLLOW THIS, THEY CAN’T HAVE SHARP BRAINS AND IF THEY DON’T HAVE SHARP BRAINS, THEY CAN NEVER GUIDE THEIR CHILD TOO IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THIS IS NOTHING BUT COLLECTIVE CONSCIENCE WHEN ONE’S CONSCIENCE HAS THE CASCADING EFFECT ON PEOPLE AND SOCIETY ALL AROUND.
